How long does it take for Cialis to work, and how long does it last?
Take it at least 30 to 60 minutes before sex. "In some men CIALIS can work as early as 16 minutes after taking the tablet but it is recommended that you allow 1 hour the first time you take it", and "CIALIS has been proven to be effective for up to 36 hours" — you can get an erection when sexually stimulated at any time in the 36 hours after the tablet (Cialis CMI). The usual on-demand dose is 10 mg, which a doctor may raise to 20 mg; never more than one tablet a day, with or without food, swallowed whole with a glass of water. It only works with arousal: "You and your partner will need to engage in foreplay". The detail is in how long does Cialis take to work? In Australia Cialis is prescription-only, after a doctor has assessed you, and it must never be taken with nitrates, the medicines for angina, or with "poppers" (healthdirect; Cialis CMI).
Can Cialis affect ejaculation?
Not directly: Cialis treats erections, and neither the Australian leaflet nor the European label lists a change in ejaculation among its effects. The European label does list blood in the semen (haematospermia) among its rare side effects, next to prolonged erections and priapism (EMA product information). healthdirect is explicit that erectile dysfunction "does not include problems with" ejaculation, and that treatment "cannot fix things that have always been an issue, such as problems with ejaculation or sensation" (healthdirect). The full answer: can Cialis affect ejaculation?
Does Cialis make you last longer in bed?
It keeps the window for an erection open for up to 36 hours, but it does not delay ejaculation. The tablet approved for premature ejaculation in Australia is a different medicine, dapoxetine (Priligy) (ARTG 147946), and it too is prescription-only. Why is Cialis not working?
First check that it has had a fair trial. Australian Prescriber advises taking the tablet as prescribed on five to six occasions before judging it, and notes that the response "can be affected by anxiety, alcohol, excessive expectations of how these drugs should work, and not waiting long enough for them to work"; men with severe blood-vessel disease or past pelvic surgery may not respond (Australian Prescriber). The Cialis leaflet adds that "if you're feeling anxious or nervous you may not respond to the first tablet", that a daily 5 mg dose "may take up to 1 week for a full effect", and that drinking "may affect your ability to get an erection". The causes and next steps are in why is Cialis (tadalafil) not working for erectile dysfunction? Alcohol has its own page — can you drink alcohol while taking Cialis? — and when tablets fail, injections, devices and other treatments are in our guide to treating erectile dysfunction.
Should you take Cialis every day or only when needed?
Either, depending on how often you have sex. Cialis 10 mg or 20 mg is taken before sex and "is not for continuous daily use"; Cialis 5 mg once a day "is for patients who anticipate frequent use of CIALIS (i.e. at least twice weekly)", lets you get an erection at any time of the day with sexual stimulation, and is taken at about the same time each day. Do not take both regimens together (Cialis CMI). The two are compared in daily or on-demand Cialis: which works better?
The daily dose works in trials. In the two main studies of the general population, men on Cialis 5 mg once a day succeeded in 57% and 67% of attempts at intercourse on average, against 31% and 37% on a placebo; in men who had never used a PDE5 inhibitor, 68% against 52%. The label asks for the daily regimen to be "reassessed periodically" (EMA product information). Does tadalafil lower blood pressure?
A little, and usually not enough to matter — except with nitrates and some alpha-blockers. In healthy men, tadalafil made no significant difference to blood pressure compared with a placebo (a mean maximal fall of 1.6/0.8 mm Hg lying down). With blood-pressure medicines the fall is "in general, minor and not likely to be clinically relevant", but with alpha-blockers it can cause symptomatic low blood pressure in some men, and the combination with doxazosin is not recommended (EMA product information). Nitrates are ruled out altogether, because tadalafil increases their blood-pressure-lowering effect. More in does tadalafil lower or raise blood pressure?
It is not a blood-pressure treatment. The Australian leaflet says not to use Cialis if your blood pressure "is unusually high or low or is not effectively treated", and lists blood-pressure medicines such as metoprolol, irbesartan and enalapril among those that "may interfere with CIALIS" (Cialis CMI): can Cialis be used with high or low blood pressure?
Do creams or gels for erectile dysfunction work?
No cream or gel is among the treatments healthdirect lists for erectile dysfunction in Australia: the options are the tablets (avanafil, vardenafil, sildenafil and tadalafil), alprostadil injections, vacuum devices, counselling and lifestyle change (healthdirect). Eroxon, the gel sold without a prescription in Europe, is not on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods — see Eroxon gel reviews. Is generic tadalafil as good as Cialis, and can you take 40 mg?
A generic contains the same active ingredient; it "may look different and have different filler ingredients" (healthdirect): is generic Cialis as good as the real thing? Cialis is on the Australian register in 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 mg tablets, and "the maximum recommended dose of CIALIS is one 20 mg tablet taken before sexual activity" (Cialis CMI) — 40 mg is twice that: is it safe to take 40 mg of Cialis? Against Levitra, the difference is mostly time: vardenafil can work from about 25 minutes for up to four to five hours (EMA), tadalafil for up to 36. The Levitra brand is not on the Australian register, but generic vardenafil is: Levitra or Cialis: which works better?
