Does Cialis make you last longer in bed? Not by delaying ejaculation. Cialis helps you get and keep an erection when you are aroused, at any time in the 36 hours after a tablet (Cialis CMI), but it is not a treatment for premature ejaculation: a review for Australian GPs found that medicines of its kind do not lengthen the time to ejaculation on their own (RACGP). Where early ejaculation comes with erection problems, treating the erection can help both.
What does "lasting longer" on Cialis actually mean?
A longer window, not a longer erection or a later climax. "CIALIS has been proven to be effective for up to 36 hours": with sexual stimulation you can get an erection at any time in that period (Cialis CMI). In studies of 1,054 men, tadalafil improved the ability to have successful intercourse up to 36 hours after a dose, and to get and keep an erection long enough for sex from as early as 16 minutes (EMA — Cialis product information). Timing has its own page: how long does Cialis last? An erection that lasts longer than 4 hours is a serious side effect — call your doctor straight away or go to the emergency department of your nearest hospital (Cialis CMI).
Does Cialis delay ejaculation?
Not reliably, and no label claims it. The review for Australian GPs lists PDE5 inhibitors, the class of Cialis and Viagra, with the notes "Monotherapy has no effect on IELT" — the time from penetration to ejaculation — and "Not established monotherapy for PE" (RACGP). In a single-blind, placebo-controlled trial of daily tadalafil 5 mg in 55 men with lifelong premature ejaculation, the time to ejaculation rose by a few seconds in both groups over three months, with no significant difference between tadalafil and placebo (Abou Faddan et al., Arab J Urol 2022). Pooled trials are more mixed: a review of 15 randomised trials found PDE5 inhibitors lengthened that time more than placebo, but "The majority were of unclear methodological quality" (Martyn-St James et al., Eur Urol Focus 2017), and a Sydney-led review found "no convincing evidence" for them in men with lifelong premature ejaculation and normal erections (McMahon et al., BJU Int 2006).
Can Cialis help when premature ejaculation comes with erection problems?
It can. The two often go together: about 1 in 3 to 1 in 4 men with premature ejaculation also have erectile dysfunction (Healthy Male), and men with erection problems may try to ejaculate early, before the erection is lost. In that situation an ED medicine "may improve premature ejaculation ... by providing a perception of greater control over ejaculation", and guidelines suggest treating the erection problem first (RACGP). How that is done is set out in treating premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction together.
What does treat premature ejaculation?
In Australia the tablet approved for it is dapoxetine (Priligy) (RACGP), and it needs a prescription (TGA). A numbing spray can be bought at a pharmacy without a prescription, and techniques you can learn and counselling with a psychologist or sex therapist can help (healthdirect). Every option, ranked by its status in Australia, is compared in our guide to lasting longer in bed.
Is Cialis any different from Viagra here?
Only in timing. Both are PDE5 inhibitors, and neither is a treatment for premature ejaculation on its own (RACGP). Sildenafil's effects can last up to 4 hours (healthdirect), tadalafil's up to 36 (Cialis CMI). The Viagra side is answered in does Viagra make you last longer in bed? and does sildenafil increase the duration of sexual activity?, including a small trial on the recovery time after orgasm.
Is it safe to take Cialis just to last longer?
Only on a prescription, after a doctor has assessed you: in Australia ED medicines are prescription-only (healthdirect). Cialis must not be taken with nitrates for angina or with "poppers", and "You should not take CIALIS more than once a day"; its side effects include headache, flushing, back pain and muscle pain (Cialis CMI). What happens to ejaculation itself on Cialis is covered in can Cialis affect ejaculation?
The short answer
Cialis opens a window of up to 36 hours in which you can get an erection, and helps you keep one during sex, but it does not delay ejaculation, and in a placebo-controlled trial it did no better than placebo for lifelong premature ejaculation. When early ejaculation comes with erection problems, treating the erection first can help both. More on using Cialis is in our guide to how to take Cialis, when it works and why it fails.
