Which ED tablet suits you?
All four options work the same way — they increase blood flow to the penis, and only when you are sexually aroused (healthdirect). What differs is timing, how long each works, and whether it is registered in Australia. Start with how you want to use it:

Do you need a prescription in Australia?
Yes. In Australia you need a prescription for erectile dysfunction medicines, so none of them is sold over the counter (healthdirect). The one rule that applies to all of them: never take an ED tablet if you use nitrates — medicines for angina, including sprays or tablets for chest pain — and tell your doctor about every medicine you take first.

What causes erectile dysfunction?
Most men have trouble getting an erection now and then; if it keeps happening, see your GP, because erectile dysfunction is often linked to your general health — a hormone problem such as low testosterone, or psychological factors such as stress (healthdirect). Treatments beyond tablets
If tablets are not suitable or do not work, other options exist (healthdirect):
- Lifestyle changes — regular exercise, a healthy weight, managing stress and quitting smoking.
- Alprostadil injections, self-administered about 15 minutes before sex.
- Vacuum erection devices (penis pumps).
- Counselling or sex therapy where anxiety or relationship factors play a part.
Platelet-rich plasma injections and acoustic shockwave therapy are not yet proven and are not currently recommended by doctors as safe and effective treatments.

There is no single best pill. The medicines available in Australia are sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil and avanafil, and they work in the same way — by increasing blood flow to the penis when you are aroused. The difference is timing: sildenafil is taken about an hour before sex, while tadalafil can work for up to 36 hours or be taken at a low dose once a day. Your GP chooses the medicine and the dose that suit you.

None is "stronger" in a simple sense. Each medicine has a maximum dose — for sildenafil it is 100 mg, for tadalafil taken on demand 20 mg — and you should never take more than the maximum, or more than one dose a day. What differs between the medicines is how soon and for how long they work.
Tadalafil works for the longest: it can help you get an erection when you are sexually stimulated at any time in the 36 hours after the tablet. No ED medicine causes a permanent erection — an erection that will not go down needs urgent medical help.
