Is any ED medicine sold over the counter in Australia?
No. The erectile dysfunction medicines available in Australia are sildenafil (the medicine in Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil and avanafil, and a doctor assesses you before prescribing one (healthdirect — Erectile dysfunction medicines). The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) states that tadalafil and sildenafil "can only be supplied to Australians with a prescription", and that products not listed in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) "are not approved for supply in Australia, have not been reviewed for safety or quality" (TGA). What helps erections without a prescription?
Looking after your general health. healthdirect explains that "erectile dysfunction is often linked to your general health" and lists lifestyle changes that can help prevent it: "regular exercise", "maintaining a healthy weight", "managing stress" and "quitting smoking" (healthdirect — Erectile dysfunction medicines). Its page on the condition adds eating healthy food (healthdirect — Erectile dysfunction). Counselling or sex therapy "may also help" when psychological factors are part of the cause, and healthdirect notes that "Many people find devices like vacuum erection devices helpful" (healthdirect — Erectile dysfunction medicines).
Those steps have trial evidence behind them: weight loss with more exercise, stopping smoking and pelvic-floor training have each helped men in clinical studies. Do supplements sold as alternatives to Viagra work?
Not like the medicine. Most natural supplements sold for erections have little or no trial evidence, and none has been shown to match a prescription medicine: L-arginine and red ginseng have the most trial data, and their effects are small. A supplement on a chemist's shelf has not been checked for whether it works, either. Can a "herbal" alternative contain the real medicine?
Yes. In June 2026 TGA laboratory testing found undeclared sildenafil, tadalafil and dapoxetine, all prescription-only, in sexual enhancement products sold as dietary supplements or natural formulas (TGA safety advisory, 29 June 2026).
