What is the difference between Viagra and Viagra Professional? Viagra is a registered medicine; "Viagra Professional" is not on the Australian register at all. The only Viagra products on the ARTG are sildenafil tablets of 25, 50 and 100 mg. "Viagra Professional" is a name used by online sellers, and what is in it cannot be checked against any Australian record.

What is on the Australian register?

Searching the ARTG for "Viagra" returns three medicines: VIAGRA sildenafil (as citrate) 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg tablets, all entered on 4 September 1998 (ARTG search). Products that are not on the ARTG "are not approved for supply in Australia, have not been reviewed for safety or quality" (TGA).

Is Viagra Professional stronger?

There is no way to know from an Australian source. It is often sold as a 100 mg sildenafil tablet — but 100 mg is simply the highest dose of ordinary Viagra, and no dose above it is approved: "Doses of 200 mg did not result in increased efficacy but the incidence of adverse reactions … was increased" (EMA). Some sellers describe it as a tablet that dissolves under the tongue; how sublingual sildenafil compares is covered in sublingual sildenafil.

And Viagra Connect?

Viagra Connect is a UK product: in 2017 the UK regulator reclassified it (sildenafil 50 mg) from a prescription-only medicine to a pharmacy medicine for men over 18 with erectile dysfunction (MHRA). That does not apply in Australia, where erectile dysfunction medicines need a prescription (healthdirect). More in Viagra vs Viagra Connect.

Do they contain the same medicine?

Registered Viagra contains sildenafil. A product that is not on the register may contain sildenafil — or a different amount, or something else: the TGA has found undeclared sildenafil, tadalafil and dapoxetine in sexual enhancement products (TGA). The safety rules for sildenafil apply to anything sold as Viagra: never with nitrates, and no more than one tablet in 24 hours (healthdirect).

The short answer

Viagra comes in 25, 50 and 100 mg registered tablets; "Viagra Professional" is not a registered product in Australia and Viagra Connect is a UK pharmacy medicine. The ED medicines are compared side by side in our comparisons guide.
