No — Kamagra is not stronger than Viagra. Both contain the same medicine, sildenafil, and a 100 mg Kamagra tablet or oral-jelly sachet states the same dose as a 100 mg Viagra tablet: the highest dose recommended for sildenafil (EMA product information for sildenafil). What separates them in Australia is status, not strength. Viagra is registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG); Kamagra is not (ARTG search).

Is Kamagra as strong as Viagra?

On the label, yes: 100 mg of sildenafil is 100 mg whichever name is on the box, and 100 mg is the maximum recommended dose. Neither a 100 mg Kamagra tablet nor a 100 mg sachet of the oral jelly is stronger than 100 mg of Viagra; the jelly is the same medicine in a gel, not a more potent form.

Where they differ is in what has been checked. Products that are not on the ARTG "are not approved for supply in Australia, have not been reviewed for safety or quality" (TGA, February 2024). Viagra's strength is a registered strength. Kamagra's is the strength its maker states, and no Australian regulator has reviewed it.

Is Kamagra a generic Viagra?

Not in Australia. It contains Viagra's active ingredient and is often sold as "generic Viagra", but it is not an approved sildenafil here. The PDE5-inhibitor tablets available in Australia are avanafil (Spedra), vardenafil, sildenafil (for example Viagra) and tadalafil (for example Cialis), and every one of them needs a prescription (healthdirect). Do Kamagra and Viagra work the same way?

Yes. Because both are sildenafil, the same approved directions apply to each (EMA):

  • they only help an erection happen when you are sexually stimulated;
  • the usual starting dose is 50 mg, taken about one hour before sex, then adjusted between 25 mg and a maximum of 100 mg by effect and side effects;
  • take it no more than once a day;
  • taken with food, it may take longer to start working.

The strengths make one practical difference. There is no 25 mg Kamagra and the jelly comes only as a 100 mg sachet, so a man starting at the usual 50 mg dose can do so with a Kamagra tablet but not with the jelly.

Do they have the same side effects?

Yes, because the side effects are sildenafil's. Headache, facial flushing, a blocked nose and indigestion or reflux are the common ones. Changes in vision, an erection that will not go down (priapism), sudden hearing loss, dizziness or fainting, and signs of an allergic reaction are rarer and need medical help straight away (healthdirect).

Do not take either with nitrates (medicines for angina) or with riociguat. Neither is for anyone with severe liver disease, low blood pressure, a recent stroke or heart attack, a hereditary eye disease such as retinitis pigmentosa, or past vision loss from NAION (EMA). Viagra comes on a prescription after a doctor's assessment; Kamagra does not, so ask your GP about sildenafil before a first dose if you take any heart or blood-pressure medicine.

Kamagra or Viagra: which should you choose?

Choose on status and form, not on strength. If you want a sildenafil that is on the Australian register, that is Viagra or another sildenafil your GP prescribes. If you choose Kamagra, you get the same medicine under the same dosing rules, including an oral jelly for anyone who finds tablets hard to swallow, and you accept that the TGA has not reviewed its safety or quality.
