Can Viagra Connect be purchased over the counter? Not in Australia: sildenafil, the medicine in it, is prescription-only here, like tadalafil, and Viagra Connect is not on the Australian register. In the UK it can, but only from a pharmacy, after the pharmacist has asked about your health. The TGA puts the Australian rule plainly: tadalafil, sildenafil and dapoxetine "can only be supplied to Australians with a prescription" (TGA). The UK rule dates from 28 November 2017, when the UK regulator announced that Viagra Connect, a 50 mg sildenafil tablet for erectile dysfunction, would become a pharmacy medicine.
What did the UK regulator decide?
That one sildenafil product could be sold without a prescription. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that "Viagra Connect (containing sildenafil 50mg) will be formally classified from a prescription only medicine (POM) to a pharmacy medicine (P). This means it could be available without prescription for use by men over 18 who have erectile dysfunction" (MHRA, 28 November 2017). It was "the first application for a sildenafil product to be available as a pharmacy medicine" (MHRA public assessment report). How the rest of UK sildenafil is supplied is answered in can you buy Viagra over the counter in the UK?, and Ireland's rule in can Viagra be bought over the counter in Ireland?
Does over the counter mean you can take it off the shelf?
No. Viagra Connect is a pharmacy medicine, and the MHRA's report defines the term: "Pharmacy medicines can be supplied without prescription only from pharmacies, by or under the supervision of a pharmacist" (MHRA public assessment report), and they "are not usually displayed on open shelves" (MHRA guidance). For Viagra Connect, "the medicine will be sold from pharmacies following a discussion with the pharmacist. Pharmacists will be able to determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient" (MHRA, 28 November 2017).
Who is Viagra Connect not sold to?
Men with serious heart, liver or kidney disease, and men on certain other medicines. In the MHRA's words, Viagra Connect "will not be sold to those with severe cardiovascular disorders; at high cardiovascular risk; liver failure; severe kidney failure; or taking certain interacting medicines. Use of Viagra Connect in these groups of men must continue to be under the supervision of a doctor" (MHRA, 28 November 2017). The pharmacy status came with limits as well: "Strength: 50 mg sildenafil citrate", "Maximum daily dose: 50 mg" and "Maximum pack size: 8 tablets" (MHRA public assessment report). How that compares with prescribed Viagra is set out in Viagra vs Viagra Connect.
Is Viagra Connect on the Australian register?
No. A search of the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods for "viagra connect" returns no matching results (ARTG search, 27 September 2026). Products that are not on the register "are not approved for supply in Australia, have not been reviewed for safety or quality" (TGA). The UK's pharmacy rule does not apply here.
The short answer
Viagra Connect is sold over the counter in the UK, from pharmacies, after a discussion with the pharmacist, to men over 18. In Australia it is not on the register, and every erectile dysfunction medicine needs a prescription: "you need a prescription to get ED medicines", and a doctor assesses you first (healthdirect).
