Can Viagra be bought over the counter in Ireland? Not in Australia, where sildenafil and tadalafil are prescription-only. In Ireland, one strength can: the Irish regulator lists Viagra Connect, a 50 mg sildenafil tablet for erectile dysfunction, as a non-prescription medicine sold only through pharmacies, after a consultation. The regulator is the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA); every entry below was read on its website on 27 September 2026.

What does the HPRA say about Viagra Connect?

That it needs no prescription but is sold only by pharmacies, with a consultation. The HPRA's entry for Viagra Connect 50 mg film-coated tablets, licensed on 22 March 2019, gives its legal supply status as "Product not subject to medical prescription", its place of sale as "Supply through pharmacies only", and this condition of licence: "HCP consultation required for OTC supply", an HCP being a healthcare professional (HPRA — Viagra Connect 50 mg tablets). The entry for Viagra Connect 50 mg orodispersible films, licensed on 8 August 2025, carries the same three lines (HPRA — Viagra Connect films). The Irish product information adds that Viagra Connect "is not indicated for individuals below 18 years of age" (summary of product characteristics, HPRA, 2 April 2026).

Who decides whether you can have it?

The pharmacist. For another 50 mg sildenafil tablet licensed for pharmacy supply, the HPRA's assessment report spells out the Irish rule: "The prescription status of Sildenvia 50mg film-coated tablet in Ireland is for supply as a non-prescription medicine in pharmacies only, following a detailed consultation with the pharmacist to ensure patient suitability" (HPRA public assessment report, 19 March 2024).

Is all sildenafil sold over the counter in Ireland?

No, only some 50 mg tablets and films. The HPRA lists 49 authorised medicines containing sildenafil. Five, all 50 mg, are "Product not subject to medical prescription": the two Viagra Connect forms and three other 50 mg sildenafil tablets. The other 44 are prescription medicines, listed as "Product subject to prescription which may not be renewed (A)" or "which may be renewed (B)". They include every 25 mg and 100 mg product, and Viagra itself in 25, 50 and 100 mg (HPRA — Viagra 100 mg, for example). The Viagra Connect product information draws the same line: "For the POM product only: Based on efficacy and tolerability, the dose may be increased to 100 mg or decreased to 25 mg." Does the Irish rule apply in Australia?

No. Viagra Connect is not on the Australian register: a search of the ARTG for "viagra connect" returns no matching results (ARTG search, 27 September 2026). In Australia tadalafil, sildenafil and dapoxetine "can only be supplied to Australians with a prescription" (TGA). Where Viagra Connect came from is on can Viagra Connect be bought over the counter?

The short answer

In Ireland, Viagra Connect and a few other 50 mg sildenafil tablets need no prescription, but the HPRA allows them to be sold only through pharmacies, after a consultation; every other sildenafil medicine, Viagra included, is prescription-only. In Australia "you need a prescription to get ED medicines", and a doctor assesses you first (healthdirect). What that means in practice is in can you get Viagra without seeing a doctor?
