Can Viagra be bought over the counter in Tenerife? No — as in Australia, it needs a prescription. Spain's official register of medicines lists Viagra as "Medicamento sujeto a prescripción médica", a medicine subject to a doctor's prescription (CIMA — Viagra 50 mg). Tenerife is one of Spain's Canary Islands, and the register is kept by Spain's medicines agency, AEMPS. At home the answer is the same: in Australia you need a prescription for every erectile dysfunction medicine, and a doctor assesses you first (healthdirect).
What does Spain's medicines register say about Viagra?
That it needs a prescription, in every strength. CIMA, the "Centro de información online de medicamentos de la AEMPS", lists Viagra 25, 50 and 100 mg film-coated tablets and a 50 mg orodispersible tablet. The entry for the 50 mg tablet gives two conditions under "Características": "Medicamento sujeto a prescripción médica" and "Con receta" — with a prescription. When we searched the register for "viagra" on 27 September 2026, all 30 entries it returned carried the same prescription condition.
Is generic sildenafil sold without a prescription in Spain?
No. A search of the same register for the active ingredient (sildenafilo) on 27 September 2026 returned 174 entries, and every one is marked as needing a prescription: 161 with the "Medicamento sujeto a prescripción médica" condition and 13 for hospital use only ("Uso hospitalario"). None is listed as available without one, and the register has no entry named Viagra Connect.
Can you take your own Viagra to Tenerife?
Spain's medicines agency says travellers may bring their personal medication, and that they may be asked for the prescription or a medical report when they enter or leave: "Los viajeros podrán llevar su medicación personal, pudiendo requerirse la presentación de la correspondiente receta o informe médico tanto en la entrada como en la salida de España." The amount should suit the prescribed treatment and not be more than is needed for three months (AEMPS — medicines for travellers).
Spain's consulate in Melbourne explains that a permit before travel is needed for medicines containing narcotic or psychotropic substances under international control. For other medicines, "current customs and border control regulations must always be observed", and "In the case of prescription medication, it is recommended that travelers travel to Spain with the corresponding prescription issued by a doctor" (Consulate General of Spain in Melbourne).

What do you need to bring it home to Australia?
The TGA's rules for entering Australia with medicines for your own use include: "Keep the product in its original packaging with dispensing labels (if possible)"; "For prescription medicines, carry the prescription or letter from your doctor that outlines what you are taking and how much you are bringing"; and "Do not bring in more than a 3-month supply". The same page warns: "It is against the law to bring medicines and medical devices into Australia to give to someone else" (TGA — Entering Australia).
The Australian Border Force asks for the letter or prescription to be "written in English", and says: "You should leave your medicine in its original packaging and declare it to the Australian Border Force when you arrive" (ABF — medicines and substances).
The short answer
No: Spain's national register lists Viagra and every sildenafil medicine as needing a prescription, as they do in Australia. If you travel with your own tablets, carry them in their pack with your prescription or a doctor's letter, and check the official rules above before you go.
