Can you take Viagra with statins? Yes — statins are not listed as interacting with Viagra. The Australian Viagra leaflet names the medicines to be careful with, and cholesterol medicines such as atorvastatin or rosuvastatin are not among them. The medicines that must never be combined with Viagra are nitrates, for angina — and men on a statin often have heart disease, which the prescriber needs to know about.
Does Viagra interact with statins?
No interaction is listed. The Viagra leaflet's list — nitrates, some antifungal medicines and antibiotics, HIV medicines, alpha-blockers and bosentan, among others — does not include statins (Viagra CMI). The European product information lists the medicines that raise sildenafil levels (for example ketoconazole, erythromycin, ritonavir); statins are not among them (EMA).
What about heart disease?
That is the real question for most men on a statin. Sexual activity puts some strain on the heart, so the doctor who prescribes Viagra needs to check you are fit enough for it and know about every medicine you take — above all any nitrate spray or tablet for chest pain (Viagra CMI; healthdirect). If you have angina and use nitrates, Viagra is not for you; see can nitrates be taken with Viagra?
Can statins cause erectile dysfunction?
healthdirect lists "some medicines used to treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression or prostate cancer" among the causes of erectile dysfunction (healthdirect). High cholesterol itself damages blood vessels, which can also cause it. Both questions have their own pages: can statins cause erectile dysfunction? and can high cholesterol cause erectile dysfunction? Never stop a statin on your own: talk to your doctor first.
What about grapefruit?
Grapefruit juice can raise sildenafil levels modestly (EMA), and it interacts with some other medicines too, so ask your pharmacist if you drink it regularly. More in does grapefruit juice affect Viagra?
Can Viagra be taken with another ED medicine?
No — sildenafil should not be combined with tadalafil, vardenafil or another PDE5 inhibitor, and no more than one sildenafil tablet should be taken in 24 hours (healthdirect).
The short answer
Statins and Viagra are not listed as interacting. What matters is the heart condition a statin is often prescribed for, and nitrates, which must never be combined with Viagra. Every combination is covered in our guide to taking Viagra or Cialis with other medicines.
