Can you get Viagra over the counter at Walmart? No: in the United States, as in Australia, Viagra and generic sildenafil are prescription medicines, and the FDA lists no sildenafil product with over-the-counter status. This page gives the US regulator's answer, then the Australian one.

What does the FDA list for Viagra?

A prescription medicine. In the FDA's Drugs@FDA database, VIAGRA (sildenafil citrate) tablets of 25, 50 and 100 mg, application NDA 020895, carry the marketing status "Prescription"; the original approval is dated 27 March 1998 (Drugs@FDA — Viagra). On the US label, a "HUMAN PRESCRIPTION DRUG LABEL", the 25, 50 and 100 mg pack panels each read "Rx only" (DailyMed — Viagra label, revised November 2023).

Is generic sildenafil over the counter in the US?

No. We searched the Drugs@FDA records on 27 September 2026: of 106 sildenafil products, 79 have the status "Prescription", 18 "Discontinued" and 9 "None (Tentative Approval)", and none "Over-the-counter" (FDA — Drugs@FDA data, openFDA). What about Viagra Connect?

It is a UK product. The UK regulator, the MHRA, reclassified Viagra Connect, a 50 mg sildenafil tablet, as a pharmacy medicine in 2017: "This means it could be available without prescription for use by men over 18 who have erectile dysfunction" (MHRA, 28 November 2017). What is the rule in Australia?

A prescription, as in the US: "In Australia, you need a prescription to get ED medicines" (healthdirect), and sildenafil "can only be supplied to Australians with a prescription" (TGA). The only Viagra on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods is the 25, 50 and 100 mg tablet (ARTG search).
